HISTORY OF HOLI FESTIVAL

In the ancient time, there are various legends to explain the meaning of the word "Holi" and this word originated from "Holika" and the most prominent of all is associated with the king Hiranyakashyap. Hiranyakashya wanted that everyone should only worship him in place of god but his own son, named Prahlad disappointed him and became the devotee of Lord Naarayana. The king was very harsh and ordered his sister, Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap as Holika had a boon due to which she could enter fire without causing harm to herself by the god but with the grace of god Naarayan Prahlad was saved and the holika died with her evil desires. Thereafter, the god killed the king .
Lord Krishna is also associated with colours as the Lord started the tradition of playing with colours by applying colour on his beloved Radha and other Gopis. There are also a few other related stories associated with this festival - like the stories of Shiva and Kaamadeva .All depicts triumph of good over evil .

CELEBRATION OF HOLIKOTSAV

Ulbaruni, the famous Muslim tourist also mentioned about holikotsav in his historical memories. Other Muslim writers of that period mentioned about holikotsav was not only celebrated by the Hindus but also by the Muslims. Ancient temples also depicts the value of holi festivals. In the 16th century panel sculpted in a temple at capital of Vijayanagar, shows a joyous scene of Holi. It shows a royal couple sitting on a grand swing, while maidens are playing music and spraying colors with pichkaris. There are a lot of other paintings in the temples of Medieval India which provide a pictoral description of Holi festival.

SIGNIFICANCE OF HOLI

In spite of being such a colourful festival, there are various aspects of Holi which makes it so significant in our life.

Social Significance:Holi helps to bring the society together with the feeling of love and strengthen the secular fabric of our country. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and brotherhood. The joy of celebration of holi doesn’t seems whether you are known/ unknown or friends/evil. On this auspicious day people do not differentiate between the rich and poor . Holi brings the joy, happiness and new colours in one’s life. Regional disparities and differences no longer exist after celebrating this colourful holi festival.

HOLI CELEBRATION:

Holi is a festival of colours and is celebrated with all family members ,relatives and friends . On  this day everyone play holi with colours, sing holi songs and special Holi dishes like gujiyas, dahi bhalle, bhang ke pakoras and various holi special drinks.  In different parts of country it is celebrated in different manners like flower showers , lathmar holi, gulal holi and coloured water holi. People organise various parties called as holi milan samaroh, rain dance parties, etc.

Holi festival brings lots of different colours and water colour splashes but excess of everything always lead to damages .The colours damage to skin and also pollute the environment which leads to its degradation.
